Your AI Agents Probably Have More Access Than Any Employee Ever Would

September 07, 2026

If you asked your security team right now which AI agents have standing access to your production database, how many could answer immediately? For most companies, the honest answer is not many. AI agents running automated troubleshooting, database queries, and CI/CD pipelines often get set up the fast way: a long-lived API key dropped into a config file, tied to an account with far more permission than the task actually needs.

A recent breakdown of just-in-time access for AI agents lays out exactly why this has become a serious blind spot, and it is worth walking through.

Why Do AI Agents Need Different Access Rules Than Employees?

Traditional Identity and Access Management was designed around human behavior. A person logs in, does some work, and logs out. Access checks happen once, at the front door.

AI agents do not behave this way. They act continuously, call multiple systems through APIs, and often share a single privileged service account across several agents at once, which makes it nearly impossible to tell which agent did what when something goes wrong. Add in the fact that access is typically checked only once, at authentication, and never re-evaluated during execution, and you get a system that has no way to notice when an agent starts doing something it was never meant to do.

This matters more with every passing month. If an attacker manages to compromise an agent, or tricks it through a prompt injection into taking an unintended action, standing credentials hand that attacker the same level of access the agent already had. There is no extra door to get through.

What Actually Changes With Just-in-Time Access?

A just-in-time access solution flips the model. Instead of a credential that sits active indefinitely, the agent requests access only when it needs to perform a specific task, and that access expires automatically once the task is done.

In practice, this looks like a short lifecycle: the agent’s identity gets verified, the request is checked against policy, temporary credentials are issued for a defined window, the session is monitored while it runs, and access is revoked the moment the job finishes or the time limit runs out. At no point does the agent hold a credential it is not actively using.

This closes off several of the more common ways these systems get abused, including credential theft from exposed API keys, lateral movement after a single compromised account, and the kind of unchecked privilege escalation that turns a small mistake into a major incident.

Is This Just a Technical Fix, or Does It Change Compliance Too?

Both, and the compliance side matters more than most teams initially expect. Frameworks like SOC 2, ISO 27001, and HIPAA all require organizations to show that access follows least privilege and that every action can be traced back to an accountable identity. A permanent service account shared across multiple agents makes that kind of audit trail nearly impossible to produce cleanly.

With just-in-time access, every credential issuance and revocation is logged against a specific agent identity, which turns an audit from a scramble into something you can answer in minutes.

This is really an extension of Privileged Access Management principles that have applied to human administrators for years, now applied to the non-human identities that are quietly multiplying inside most enterprise environments. As more workflows get handed to autonomous agents, treating their access with the same discipline you would apply to a system administrator is no longer optional. It is the baseline.

It is also worth remembering that this is not a one-time cleanup project. New agents get spun up constantly as teams find new ways to automate their work, which means access governance needs to be built into how an agent gets onboarded in the first place, not bolted on months later once someone finally notices how much standing privilege has accumulated.

Skillmine Auth extends just-in-time access and privileged access controls to AI agents and other non-human identities, so autonomous workflows never carry more standing privilege than the task requires.
